Our History

Gordon Fletcher and Sons is one of the oldest established family businesses in Spennymoor, County Durham.

Originally founded by Gordon Fletcher's father, Thomas Atkinson Fletcher, Tommy as he was known to almost everyone in the town, who had originally worked with his uncle, Percy Byers in the same line of business.

In 1938 the family business was set up at its present main office premises of Charles Street, where it is currently run by Mr. Gordon Fletcher and two of his sons, Peter and Colin.

Over a decade ago we incorporated CHARLTON'S of Kirk Merrington, an old established family business run by George and Jack Charlton, who had also served the local community of Kirk Merrington, Ferryhill, Chilton, Leasingthorne, Coundon and Leeholme for many years.

This year, our Spennymoor office Rest rooms have undergone extensive refurbishment and expansion to complement the work achieved at Lazarus House.

The business has grown over the years and now in its third generation, has expanded with the building of additional premises last year in nearby Ferryhill, County Durham.

The new Rest rooms and Service Chapel, named Lazarus House, was originally a derelict church, St. Martha & St. Mary's and after extensive refurbishment and building work by our own building business, it has risen up, back to its original splendour.

We run two fleets of Coleman Milne, Ford Hearses and Limousines which are used not only by our own premises, but also hired out by other Independent Family Undertakers within the County Durham, Darlington and the Dales areas.
